Communication Fundamentals

Fallacies about listening

  • Listening is not my problem!
  • Listening and hearing are the same
  • Good readers are good listeners
  • Smarter people are better listeners
  • Listening improves with age
  • Not paying attention (preoccupation, prejudice, self-centeredness, stereotype)
  • Listening skills are difficult to learn

Ninety-three percent of communication is non-verbal

Nonverbal communication involves the use of eye contact, facial expressions, gestures, and touch to communicate a message. Nonverbal communication that is aligned with verbal communication improves the receiver's ability to understand the message. Focus on communicating nonverbal cues that are supportive, and positive and foster effective communication.

Barriers to Communication are anything that interferes with the delivery of clear, effective communication.

  • Physical Disabilities - Hearing impairment/deafness, Visual impairment/blindness
  • Psychological Barriers - Prejudices, Frustrations, Impatience, Annoyances
  • Differences in Cultural Beliefs - Language, Health, Practices, Eye Contact, Touch
  • Cognitive Impairment - Memory, Perception, Problem-solving, Emotional response
