Effective Communication
Communicating effectively is vital for successful business ventures. Employees will communicate with customers and co-workers often. For that reason, it is important to understand the elements involved in the communication process pictured in the infographic below.
The Communication Process
Good communication skills aid in promoting a company’s mission, purpose, and explanation of services and/or products provided. The skill also benefits you as a student as you communicate with instructors and classmates. Successful communication requires that the message is sent, received, and understood. During this process, it is possible that internal and external barriers to communication might occur and interfere with communication.
Internal barriers can be associated with thoughts or feelings while external barriers are associated with sound, room temperature, and facility issues. The infographic below defines each element’s role.

Real World Incident
Many states were impacted by Hurricane Irma during the Summer of 2017. Residents in Manatee County Florida, located in the Tampa Bay area, were witnesses to a press conference where a communication blunder occurred. After discovering an interpreter had not been secured to dispatch messages to citizens who had hearing impairments, county officials decided to ask an employee who understood sign language to interpret the details regarding the storm. Unfortunately, nothing that the interpreter communicated made sense.
Even though we communicate each day, it is crucial that we remember how our words and gestures project messages to others. Therefore, make sure to always focus on the main idea of the message you plan to present, regardless of the form used, and adjust if necessary, to ensure successful communication.
