Active Listening
Each day we listen casually as we communicate with classmates, friends, and family. During these conversations we tend not to focus on examining what is said or even trying to remember the details. As a future business leader, you should begin thinking actively with a recognition that there is a purpose for listening to comprehend communication. The first step in developing your listening skills is having a knowledge of the types of listening.
Active Listening 4 Types:
Informative: hearing and trying to understand information being presented
Evaluative: hearing and trying to understand and judge what is being said
Empathetic: hearing and trying to understand and offer feedback that shows you have understood the message
Reflective: hearing and trying to understand and offer feedback that helps the speaker think about his or her feelings or objectives
Tips for Practicing Active Listening
- As you begin practicing active listening, eliminate any listening barriers you might encounter. For example, clear your mind of distracting thoughts and listen carefully as your teacher provides instruction.
- Do not allow prejudices or past experiences hinder you from listening with an open mind.
- Never hesitate to ask questions if clarification is needed on a subject shared.
- When communicating, do not think about your response while the individual is speaking.
- Do not let an emotional response to a message distract you from listening.
- Finally, offer feedback to those communicating with you in order to confirm your understanding.
