Stop Motion
Introduction
Stop Motion
Stop Motion animation describes animation created by physically manipulating the real-world object and photographing them 1 frame of the video at a time to create the illusion of movement.
Check out the following video that gives an overview of what stop motion is, and how it works?

There are many different types of stop motion animation. Read over each definition and watch each video to learn more.
- Puppet Animation - Puppet animation requires a puppet that has a bendable skeleton.
- Clay Animation - Clay animation or Claymation uses figures made up of clay or a similar malleable material to create the stop-motion animation.
- Cut Out Animation - Cut Out Animation is a kind of stop-motion animation produced by moving two-dimensional pieces of material cloth or paper.
- Model Animation - Model Animation is a form of stop motion animation designed to merge with live action footage to create the illusion of a real-world fantasy sequence.
- Object Animation - Object animation applies to the use of regular inanimate objects in stop-motion animation, as opposed to specially created items.
- Graphic Animation - Graphic animation uses the non-drawn flat visual graphic material like photographs, magazines, newspaper clippings, etc. which are sometimes managed frame-by-frame to create movement. At other times, the graphics stop stationary, while the stop-motion camera is moved to create on-screen action.
- Brick Film - Brickfilm are a subgenre of object animation including using Lego and other similar brick toys to make an animation.
- Pixilation - Real humans as stop motion characters.
Components of Planning a Stop Motion Video
Step One | Step Two | Step Three | |
---|---|---|---|
Term | Script | Split Screen Script | Story Reel |
Description |
The script should be between 60-150 words of story that considers: · Narration · Theme · Audience · Fun Visuals Make sure to edit your story and remember that for 1 second it requires 10 shots. So, for a 30 second video, you will need around 300 shots. |
The Split Screen Script is a 3-column format with the words (narration), picture or shot, and a notes column. It is key to keep it simple. In the notes column, you will document the timing for each narration. This is often referred to as a simplified storyboard. | The Story Reel is when you record yourself narrating while filming only over pictures. This allows you an opportunity to see if the story works, and it will also help with pacing. |

Now that you have planned (Pre-Production) your stop motion video, it is time to start each shot (Production). Watch Bim Bam’s video explaining how to use your smartphone to film your stop motion video:
Of course before you publish, you will need to edit your stop motion video (Post-Production).
