Stress Pronouns

By now you are familiar with the subject pronouns in French.

These are the pronouns we use in the subjects of sentences. See the table below.

We can also use stress pronouns to put the emphasis on a particular person.

Look at the following examples:

  • Qui aime le chocolat ?
  • MOI ! J'aime le chocolat !
  • Who likes chocolate?
  • ME! I like chocolate!
  • Qui m'appelle ?
  • Lui ! Il t'appelle !
  • Who is calling me?
  • Him! He is calling you!

Listen to the stress pronouns:

In addition to being used for emphasis, there are some words that are always followed by stress pronouns.

Example: chez

chez =   à la maison   = at home

Je suis à la maison.

Je suis chez moi.

Tu es à la maison.

Tu es chez toi.

Ils sont à la maison.

Ils sont chez eux.

Here are some other terms that are followed by stress pronouns.

  • pour - for
  • de - from
  • avec - with
