Using the Preposition de
Using de to show possession is easy when talking about your family and using mon, ma, and mes.
However, when using definite articles there are abbreviations that we have to remember.

Definite articles the le = m la = f les = pl le chat la souris les animaux
*de l' is also used before nouns starting with a silent h. For example:
- C'est le chien de l'homme.

So there are many times that you will use these de contractions in addition to showing possession.

*Did you notice the l' ? Homme starts with a silent h, so you must treat it as if it starts with a vowel.
