Self-Directed Learning Examples and Applications
If you’ve ever taught yourself a new skill — such as making banana bread, growing tomatoes, or playing a musical instrument — you’ve used self-directed learning. You can employ self-directed learning for anything you are motivated to learn, whether for a hobby or more work-related. Whatever it was, you had an intrinsic motivation driving your learning process. This is exactly how self-directed learning works.
Watch the video below to learn about examples of self-directed learning that you can find in the real world and how to apply self-directed learning to reach your personal goals.
Self-Directed Learning is Complex!
Effective self-directed learning exercises four sub-competencies: Initiate Learning, Focus on Learning, Commitment to Learning, and Reflect on Learning. Initiate Learning: Identify areas of learning need and interest; use initiative in "non-prescribed" learning; assume responsibility for self-learning management; and demonstrate a growth mindset. Focus on Learning: Question self and learning assumptions; incorporate multiple reflection points and questions into the learning process; and design a learning plan. Commit to Learning: Design an iterative learning project to focus on a cyclical learning process to craft learning goals, identify resources and activities, design a learning project, and provide evidence of accomplished learning. Reflect on Learning: Use storytelling components to capture an audience, maintain attention, and increase engagement.
