How a single bit travels from one computer to the next is a complex concept. Back in 1984, the open systems interconnection (OSI) model was published as a framework to describe the flow of information from one computing device to another operating in a networking environment. Establishing standard communication protocols is key to formalizing communication across the Internet. The model breaks down computer network communication into seven layers. All of the layers work together to create a digital message.
In fact, it can be key in troubleshooting your devices. Being able to zero in on a specific layer of OSI would be a plus. Thus, the conceptual OSI framework is crucial for designing, manufacturing, and troubleshooting network technology.
When trying to learn something new, I always like to start by creating a mnemonic. A mnemonic is a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations that assists in remembering something. "Please Do Not Touch Steve's Pet Alligator" stands for each part of the OSI framework.
Keeping that in mind let’s now take a look at a brief breakdown of each layer of the OSI Model below.
