Introduction
Networks are incredibly powerful tools that most modern people and businesses depend on daily. Networks have thousands of different uses, such as sharing resources, communicating with your friends, or even as a form of leisure when you may want to relax after school. Networks play a crucial role in keeping things connected and running smoothly. So let’s jump into understanding the breakdown of what a network is.

Computer networking can be referred to as interconnected computing devices that can exchange data and share resources with each other. These networked devices use a system of rules, called communications protocols, to transmit information over physical or wireless technologies. Computer network architecture defines the physical and logical framework of a computer network. It outlines how computers are organized in the network and what tasks are assigned to those computers. Network architecture components include : hardware and software, transmission media (wired or wireless), network topology, and communications protocols.
Network Architecture
Nodes and links are the basic building blocks in computer networking. A network node may be data communication equipment such as a modem, hub or switch, or data terminal equipment such as two or more computers and printers. A link refers to the transmission media connecting two nodes. Links may be physical, such as cable wires or optical fibers, or free space used by wireless networks.
🎧Wired | a network that uses physical media to transfer data between two or more nodes. Examples of wired technologies used in networks include coaxial cables, phone lines, and optical fibers.
💻Wireless | consists of transmitters and receivers. Nodes connect wirelessly to these transmitters and receivers to complete the network. These signals allow wireless enabled devices to communicate with each other and the internet, without having to be connected. An example of wireless is Wi-Fi.
Network Topology
Speaking of the nodes and links. With transmission comes a need for an arrangement of some sort. How the nodes and links in a network are arranged would be referred to as the topology. A network node is a device that can send, receive, store, or forward data. A network link connects nodes and may be either cabled or wireless links. They can be configured in different ways to get different outcomes.
The way in which the connections are made among all the network entities is known as network topology and specifically refers to the physical layout of the network.

Types of Networks
Computer networks can be classified based on several criteria, such as the transmission medium, the network size, the topology, and organizational intent. Take a look at the 3 most common below.
- Local area network (LAN): An interconnected system limited in size and geography. It typically connects computers and devices within a single office or building. It is used by small companies or as a test network for small-scale prototyping. connects devices within a limited geographical area, such as schools, hospitals, or office buildings.
- Personal area network (PAN): A network used by just one person to connect multiple devices, such as laptops to scanners.
- Wide area networks (WAN): An enterprise network spanning buildings, cities, and even countries. WANs are set up for long-distance communication that is secure and dependable.
