Social Media Etiquette Tips
DON'Ts
🚫 NEVER USE ALL CAPS – all caps mean that you are yelling at the reader.
🚫 Don’t post when you are angry – it might seem like a good idea at the time, but you may regret your post later. Take some time to cool off and avoid posting when you are mad.
🚫 Don’t post about all your emotions, thoughts, and feelings. If you need to talk to someone, call or meet up with a trusted friend or family member.
🚫 Don’t post a picture or a video of someone else without first getting their permission. If you do have someone’s permission to post a picture, be sure the picture is appropriate.
🚫 Don’t talk to people you do not know. There are people online who pretend to be someone they are not. So, protect yourself and don’t talk to strangers.
🚫 Don’t provide your personal information online. You should never reveal your full name, address, phone number, passwords, school name, or names of your family members.
DO's
✅ Use different email addresses and logins for all your social media accounts. If one of your accounts is compromised, your other accounts will not be affected.
✅ Create a professional email address. You will use your email address for college applications, jobs, and on your resume. So, make sure your email gives a good impression.
✅ Be very selective about what you decide to post online.
✅ Silence your phone while you are in public places especially when you are in the company of others.
✅ Set limits for how long you can use your device each day. Use devices in moderation and instead focus on personal relationships.
Digital Presence | Activity
An organization’s digital presence is how it appears online to others. This might include things the organization can control, like its website, as well as things it cannot control, like online reviews. Click on each box to learn more about the digital presence.
Digital Presence and Individuals
An individual’s digital presence is how they appear online to others. This might include social media profiles and posts, blogs, online portfolios, as well as online reviews of products/companies. Anytime you post information online, you lose some of your privacy. While employers can’t legally ask you certain questions during the job selection process (marital status, age, religion, etc.), many employers will conduct an online search to learn more about you.
