Image Language Terms Word Cloud There is so much to consider when reading an SAT passage: how a word is used, transitional words, connotative meanings, mood, tone - the list goes on and on!  It is necessary to study the effective use of language in order to answer those difficult reading passage questions.  Studying and reviewing grammar skills can also be a big help on the reading section of the SAT. All of these pieces will help students analyze language effectively.

  • What are homonyms?
  • How do you determine an author's mood and tone?
  • How can root words help to determine a word's meaning?
  • How can students effectively answer inference questions?
  • How do you construct a sentence using parallel structure?
  • How do I properly punctuate a sentence?
  • How can I ensure that I write sentences with the correct agreement?

Key Terms

1. Homonyms  - words with the same sound and/or spelling but have different meanings
2. Mood  - overall feeling of a piece of writing
3. Tone  - attitude of the writer toward a certain subject

4. Parallelism -  when words or sentences have the same grammatical structure
