Writing and Language

Image of red and white triangular signs with word TEST on them The SAT Writing and Language test will be 35 minutes long. There will be 44 questions that assess a variety of areas: expression of ideas, standard English conventions, words in context, command of evidence, analysis in history, and analysis in science.

Specifically, the questions will focus on the expression of ideas. What does this mean? Students will have to examine the development of ideas. It may be necessary to edit, revise, and add information to ensure that ideas have been effectively expressed. Students will also look at the organization of writing, which includes making sure that ideas are presented in a logical order and that transitions are used.

Furthermore, students will have to look at the use of language. They will examine various forms of rhetoric including style and tone. The questions in this section of the SAT will test students' knowledge of proper sentence structure. Can you write a parallel sentence? Can you write a complete thought without constructing a fragment or run-on sentence?

Lastly, this section will test students over proper word usage and punctuation. Students will need to know how to write sentences where the subjects agree with the verbs as well as sentences where the pronouns agrees with the antecedents. Do you know when to correctly use a comma? What about an apostrophe?

All of these skills will be reviewed in this module, so get ready to be transformed into a grammar guru!
