Vocabulary Practice

In order to do well on the SAT reading section, you must expand and practice learning relevant vocabulary words in context. In this lesson, you will concentrate on building a good vocabulary by completing several practice exercises. Knowing common synonyms for difficult vocabulary can also help you to figure out words you are unfamiliar with.

View the following reading passage.  While you read the passage, find at least five words that you currently do not know. Write down what you think the word means. In addition, jot down one clue that the passage provided in regards to the definition of the word. Even if the passage doesn't provide an outright definition, there could be synonyms of the unknown word, or perhaps the word contains a familiar root word. Now, look up the actual definitions of the words. You can use the resources provided located here Links to an external site. to assist you. Were your definitions close to the actual meaning of the words?   What helped you the most? Was it the context clues or your preexisting knowledge?
