Writer's Workshop 1
Introduction
The first module in the course, Writer’s Workshop 1, focuses on the guidelines, expectations, and foundational knowledge involving diction, syntax, and formatting. Throughout the module, you will learn about Modern Language Association (MLA) guidelines, ways to craft more effective and efficient sentences, and how to utilize active voice and parallel structure – all of which will allow you to communicate more clearly to an audience. As a writing-intensive course, AP English Language and Composition will lead you on a journey to become a much better writer and communicator. This introductory module is the first step in that journey!

- Identify and apply the different steps in the writing process
- Revise sentences for clarity in order to convey ideas clearly
- Use established conventions of mechanics and grammar to communicate effectively
- Use MLA formatting guidelines accurately

Passive Voice vs. Active Voice – a lesson on how to write in the active voice and how to revise sentences to eliminate the passive voice
MLA Formatting Guidelines – a comprehensive overview of MLA requirements, from internal citations and bibliographies to paper formatting and academic practices

- MLA: Modern Language Association
- Writing Process: Prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing
- Parallel Structure: Using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance. This can happen at the word, phrase, or clause level.
- Active Voice: Writing in which the subject of a sentence carries out the action of the verb
- Passive Voice: Writing in which the subject of a sentence receives the action of the verb instead of carrying out the action
- Concision: Expressing or covering much in few words; brief in form but comprehensive in scope; succinct; terse
