8. EggsAbout 3 million children reported having food allergies in 2007. Fortunately, many children will outgrow the allergy by age 5 and some even before. Symptoms can range from eczema and hives to asthma, inflammation of the esophagus, diarrhea, vomiting and life-threatening anaphylaxis (a severe, life threatening allergic reaction), in which major body systems quickly shut down. It is often difficult to diagnose a food allergy. Sometimes, they are even misdiagnosed. The National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases estimates that up to 50% of food allergies are misdiagnosed. Often times, the incorrect food item is blamed. That is why many doctors and allergists insist on using multiple tests to make sure the diagnoses are accurate.

Main Categories of Food Allergies

Cow's Milk: Cow's Milk has over 25 different molecules that can cause an allergic reaction in those with allergies or sensitivities. The primary item of concern is casein, a slow absorbing protein. One must consider items that contain milk like cream, creamy sauces, ice cream and milk chocolate.

Eggs: Egg allergies are common in children. Read a the label to learn if a product contains eggs or even raw eggs.

Peanuts: Individuals with a peanut allergy must be careful with any product containing peanuts. If using the same processing equipment, peanuts may leave small amounts of peanut oil on the other foods.

Soy Foods: This allergy normally starts as an infant with formula and the individual often cannot outgrow it. Soy is contained in many baked goods, drinks, meats and breakfast items.

Wheat: This allergy pertains to any products containing wheat, including: breads, cakes, breakfast cereals, pasta, crackers, and even condiments such as ketchup.

Shellfish: Shellfish includes marine animals with shells, such as shrimp, crab, and lobster, as well as octopus and squid.

Tree Nuts: This allergy pertains to any nut that grows on trees, such as pecans and walnuts.
