19th-Century Perspectives and Political Developments

Introduction

Painting - The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise by Vincent Van GoghAs the European powers moved closer to the 20th century, they came increasingly into conflict with one another. Industrialization led to a need for increased raw materials, creating a European scramble for Asian and African colonies. Two new nation-states, Germany and Italy, emerged, while Russia continued to test its boundaries in order to gain access to a warm-water port. Advances in technology and science brought about changes in lifestyle as well as an increase in disposable income and free time. Meanwhile, the rise of mass politics and the pace of social change created new forms of tension and unrest in domestic politics. The so-called Belle Epoch saw Europe flourish as it extended its influence and control over large swaths of the globe. Yet, under the surface of European preeminence, the strains that would later lead to World War I were becoming apparent.
