What is a Preposition?

Prepositions are words that relate a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence.

The following is a list of most of the prepositions used in English today. Note that many of the words may also function as other parts of speech. Also note that some prepositions are compound, made up of more than one word.

Using the following phrase can help you identify prepositions.

A rabbit peeks from behind a tree. "Behind" is a preposition.The rabbit jumped _____________ the tree. Often, many words you insert into the blank space are also prepositions.

Example: The rabbit jumped above the tree.

Example: The rabbit jumped off the tree.

This fill-in-the-blank sentence is a fast way to determine if a word could be a preposition.

More examples:

1. She walked up the stairs.

"Up" is the preposition showing the relationship between the noun and the other words in the sentence.

2. The snake slithered near the child.

"Near" is the preposition showing the relationship between the noun and the other words in the sentence.
