Consider a trip to your local coffee shop, or some establishment that you frequent within several miles of your home for which you must make three or four turns.  Pick a destination that does not have more than 3 or 4 legs to the trip. 

Discussion the path length (distance) compared to the vector displacement between your starting and ending point.  Could you estimate the displacement by using the sum of the 3 or 4 legs as vectors?
