ES - Subject Pronouns (Lesson)

Subject Pronouns (repaso)

If we were to try to match every noun [subject] to a verb form, we would have a stack of verb forms that reached the sky because we would have to list every person, every place, every thing, or every idea and match each one to a verb form. What a list that would be!

So instead, we classify every singular noun (one person or one place or thing or one idea) as "it, or "he", or "she", or "you")

Also, we classify, every plural noun (persons, places, things, ideas) as "they", or "plural you," (in the south "plural you" is known as "y'all")

Maybe in English class, you learned that pronouns are little words that take the place of nouns? Do you see all the pronouns in the classifications above?

Pronouns are very helpful, and they work very well in helping us in the matching of the verb forms to subjects: they "stand-in" for nouns, like this:

  • Singular noun - it, he, she, you
  • Plural Noun - They, You   Plural (y'all)

Test your knowledge with the following activity.

There are 10 pronouns in Spanish. Pay attention to the chart below as well because you will see this often while learning to conjugate verbs.

Formal vs. Informal

This is an important concept in the Spanish language. In order to be polite and not offend anyone pay close attention.

  • If the person is older than you, has a position of authority, or you are just meeting for the first time, use the FORMAL
  • If the person is younger than you or you know each other well, use the INFORMAL
