ES - Infinitives (Lesson)
Infinitives (Lesson)
Before you learn to change (conjugate) the infinitives to "match" their subjects, you will learn how the infinitive itself can be used as a second verb.
In this example, "I have to" is the first verb, and the infinitive " to go" is the second verb. "I have " + to go = Tengo que + ir = I have to go.
Click the character to the left below to expand for examples.
More examples of sentences where the infinitive is used as a second verb.
- I have to go to sleep now because I have to go to school early in the morning.
- I have to go to the store to buy an umbrella because it is raining.
- I like to read when it is raining.

Welcome to your first major grammar lesson in this wonderful language!
This lesson is going to prepare you to think about and talk about plans you have, things you should do, are going to do, need to do, want to do, and other such actions.
You will have some phrases that will introduce those plans and actions that have not yet happened, for example, I want to go shopping.
The phrase, I want introduces to go shopping.
Once you learn how to say, "I want," you can use it with all kinds of other phrases.
These verbs will be the first set we will use in this lesson:
- I want to = Quiero
- I do not want to = No quiero...
- I should = Debo
- I should not = No debo...
- I need to = Necesito
- I do not need = No necesito...
- I am going to = Voy a
- I am not going = No voy a...
** To form the negative, all you have to do is insert no BEFORE the 1st verb form.
Before you know it, you will have many things that you will be able to say. Then you can find the infinitives (verb forms that end in -ar / -er /- ir) to go with the phrases, and you can impress your family and friends with how much Spanish you have learned in a very short time!
