The Writing Process

Effective communication does not always come easily to everyone. However, there is a process in place that aids in crafting written interaction to ensure that the reader receives the most polished communication from the writer. Several steps appear in what scholars now call the Writing Process, and each step allows the writer to take a piece of writing and hone in on various areas to modify and create a final draft for a specific audience. The Writing Process consists of five commonly referred to steps.

The Writing Process

STAGE 1
Prewriting
Select a topic and begin brainstorming. Crate a working thesis.

STAGE 2
Drafting
Construct brainstorming ideas into paragraph form.

STAGE 3
Revising
Examine the paper as a whole and analyze arguments and organization. Peer reviews occur also.

STAGE 4
Editing/Proofreading
Check the paper sentence-by-sentence for any issues with grammar and mechanics 

STAGE 5
Publishing
Producing a final draft polished piece of writing that is organized and cohesive

By understanding and utilizing the various steps of the Writing Process the correct way, all writers will end up with an improved piece of writing.

The Writing Process

At the end of the Writing 101 module, students will use the Writing Process to craft an informative essay responding to the following topic: What are the benefits and/or drawbacks of your future career path? Let's examine the writing process in the activity below:

In order to communicate effectively through writing, the writer must take the time to prewrite, craft a rough draft, revise, proofread, and polish a piece of writing. Overall, the Writing Process allows the writer to really think through various ideas and techniques for crafting an organized, polished product that will appeal to a reader.
