(PET) Science of Energy Lesson
Science of Energy Lesson
Introduction
Technological systems and devices need energy to function. For example, cell phones need batteries and electricity. Electricity is generated through power plants. Power plants need fuel to convert into energy. Technological systems require energy sources that are inexpensive, abundant, and manageable. Societies in history have benefited from access to waterways and fuels (such as coal) to expand and strengthen their societies
This lesson will require completion of a mousetrap car. A mousetrap and household materials will be needed.

Throughout time, civilizations have relied upon the scientific principles of energy, as we now know them, to create important devices and systems for the benefit of their societies. An example is the steam engine locomotive shown. The steam engine is a machine that uses hot steam created from a boiler which is piped into a piston to create mechanical movement. In this case, the movement was to propel a locomotive. The steam engine was used for applications such as transportation, mining, agriculture, and manufacturing.
Explore the Scientific Principles Object to learn the basic understandings behind energy driven technologies.

According to the 2017 U.S. Department of Energy Fuel Economy Guide, gasoline powered vehicles are only about 12%-30% efficient according to their testing drive cycle. Refer to the graphic for the losses per system. IMAGES CREATED BY GAVS
