Foods with additives or preservatives often have a longer shelf life. This is beneficial for crops that have to be shipped long distances. This also cuts back on wasting food. Using additives and preservatives also allows food to be produced at a cheaper cost. But is there a cost to our health? Additives And Preservatives...Good or Bad?

In this module, we will study the following topics:     

The Importance of Food Additives: Additives are everywhere in our society. In the fibers in our clothes, the paint found on our cars and houses, and in the food we eat. Additives are substances that are intended to change the characteristics of our food. Usually, for the better. These additives can be used in packaging or processing and usually are already approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Process of Preservatives: Food preservation methods have been utilized since ancient times, from drying and fermenting to the more modern methods of canning and freezing. The ability to harvest and preserve food is a key aspect of human survival and life.

Governing Additives and Preservative Techniques: The overall status of a food is affected by the approval status of each individual product. So, it is a lengthy process to develop a food item. There are few areas of criteria that a manufacturer must meet when considering using a food additive or preservative.
