Science, Development, and Safety in the Lab

Do you have a favorite food? Did you know after one taste, one smell, one look that you were in love with that particular food item? That food had to be developed somewhere - someone came up with the idea to create it. They used science to determine how to develop it. They used our senses to determine if the market would enjoy and therefore buy this food. Food scientists have a great responsibility when it comes to getting your favorite food to a place where it can be purchased. 

Module Lessons Preview

In this module, we will study the following topics:

The Role of Science and the Development of New Food: New food products are developed because of demand stimulated by changing lifestyles, convenience, health or fitness, changing demographics, and other reasons as determined by market research.

Scientific Method and Sensory Evaluations: In our lives, we use problem-solving or the Scientific Method and we may not even realize it! Anytime a problem comes upon us in life we may try to fix the problem by brainstorming possible solutions to it and trying them out.

Safety in the Food Science Lab: In the Food Science lab, equipment is used to evaluate the quality and validity of food samples. Food safety is a key topic of concern among consumers and the future of food safety starts with testing in the laboratory or in the field.
