ABS - Acids and Bases Part 2 (Lesson)

Acids and Bases Part 2

Introduction

In this lesson, we will take a closer look at the properties of acids and bases, different ways to define acids and bases, and learn about a specific reaction that takes place between acids and bases.

Litmus Paper and Different Models

In this segment of Chemistry Matters, the students use litmus paper to determine the acidity of different substances and discuss the Bronsted-Lowry Model, the Arrhenius Model, and the Lewis Model. They measure the pH of different substances in water. The host describes strong and weak acids and bases and performs a lab demonstrating neutralization reactions and titration. The students begin a titration lab.

Acids and bases can also be identified using an operational definition. Operational definitions are simply a list of properties.
