The Structure of an Atom
Introduction
An atom is the smallest unit of matter that maintains all of the chemical properties of an element. Atoms contain three simple particles: protons, electrons, and neutrons. The nucleus (center) of the atom contains the protons (+) and the neutrons (no charge). The outermost regions of the atom are called electron shells and contain the electrons (-). Each element has different properties based on the arrangement and number of these basic particles. In chemistry we reference the periodic table for information regarding these subatomic particles.
