Practicing Presentations
Practice Makes Perfect
You have probably heard the quote, “practice makes perfect”. There is validity in that statement only if the practice is appropriate for the task you plan to complete. This lesson will provide practice tips for face-to-face and online presentations.
Practicing for Face-to-Face Presentations
- Plan to visit the location if the facility is close.
- Ask a colleague or guest to attend to receive feedback.
- Conduct the presentation as if your audience was present. This includes using the microphone and showcasing visuals.
- Obtain feedback from your colleague or guest. Feedback should include an evaluation of your presentation’s content, verbal and non-verbal communication, and possible questions that might be raised. After feedback is received, adjust as needed.
- Obtain the name of a representative that can assist you in the event you encounter issues on the day of the presentation.
Practicing for Web-Based Presentations
- Access the virtual room and familiarize yourself with the tools.
- In addition to joining as the presenter, open a new Window and join as a guest to see what your audience will view. If permitted, invite a guest to your practice session.
- Use an USB headset for quality audio.
- Open web pages and files prior to the start of the session.
- Greet participants as they join the session.
- Remind participants to access the Audio Setup Wizard before you begin the presentation.
- Poll participants to receive feedback.
- Determine ahead of time if the chat feature will be enabled to address questions as you progress through the presentation. It may help to have a co-presenter to address questions that arise as the presentation is in progress.
- Obtain feedback from your colleague or guest. Feedback should include an evaluation of your presentation’s content, verbal communication, ability to access and use the virtual tools, and possible questions that might be raised. After feedback is received, adjust as needed.
- Obtain the name of a representative that can assist you in the event you encounter technical issues on the day of the presentation.
Takeaway
Presenters share information that impacts how their audience will respond to various encounters in the future. If possible, rehearse your presentation in the facility or virtual room prior to the date of the event. Conduct the presentation as if your audience were attentive and present and obtain feedback from a trusted colleague or guest so that adjustments can be made. Applying these strategies will benefit you and your audience.
