Roman Numeral Analysis, Voice Leading, and Altered Chords

Introduction to Roman Numeral Analysis, Voice Leading, and Altered Chords

Music theory explains how the smaller parts in the music (rhythm, pitches, chords) relate to the large composition. We figure this out through a process of analysis. One way to analyze is by labeling chords with Roman Numerals. This aids with showing how the pitches and chords relate to one another within the composition and its key(s).

In this module, we will learn to apply Roman Numeral Analysis; identify different types of chords (other than triads); understand chord progressions and cadences; how to modulate to another key within the same composition; and how to label pitches that do not belong in the triad (non-harmonic tones).

Module Key Terms

  • Interval: An interval is simply the distance between two pitches either horizontally or vertically. When we have two pitches played simultaneously, we call them a ‘chord’.
