By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explain how the global system of agriculture works and the benefits and issues that are inherently part of that system.

Nope, you're still in AP Human Geography. Food is apparently really important when it comes to this subject.

Your food probably gets to travel more than you do. Think about it.

Where does your morning coffee, chocolate, or banana come from? The truth may not be as simple as you think.

Our food often travels many, many miles before it gets to our plate.

The global system of agriculture depends upon many parts and systems. This lesson will take a look at how those systems work to create global supply chains to get our food from one place to another.

I only get my bread from France.... just kidding!

Countries no longer need to produce all their own food, which allows for specialization of products and economic growth, but also creates vulnerability to global issues.

The video below explains how agriculture has become interdependent and some issues that plague our interconnected global food system.

Before we can go any further, we need to understand the difference between a commodity chain and a supply chain.

Commodity Chain: A complex process used by corporations to gather resources, transform them into goods, and transport them to consumers.
- The commodity chain is all the inputs and processes to produce the product.
- These are all the steps in the process from raw material to finished product.

Supply Chain: All the steps required to get a product from a producer to a customer, often spanning thousands of miles.
- The supply chain focuses on the logistics of moving goods from one place to another.
- A supply chain connects many commodity chains for a company.

The Global Supply Chain: Coffee is grown, harvested, and sorted in developing nations located within the "Coffee Belt." It is then exported to more developed countries, where the high-value stages of roasting, branding, and marketing take place.
Economic Disparity: At each stage of the commodity chain, the product adds value. However, the farmers who produce the raw beans typically earn the smallest portion of the final profit.

- Social: Coffee consumption is a major social habit in developed countries, driving high demand.
- Political: Trade practices are often influenced by neocolonialism and government-led fair trade policies.
- Economic: Developed nations capture the most profit by focusing on the secondary and tertiary sectors of the industry.
- Environmental: High demand leads to deforestation in tropical regions like Colombia, Brazil, and Ethiopia.
The Impact of Fair Trade: Fair Trade initiatives aim to provide farmers with higher incomes
- (e.g.,1.80/lb vs. 40/lb for non-Fair Trade) and mandate sustainable practices, such as the prohibition of GMOs and the elimination of child labor.

Food imports and exports are a complex system of movement at the national, world regional, and global scales.

Hold up! Is the US really importing more food than we are exporting? Now that is a surprise!

Right? Who would have thought! Do you know who else is dependent on food imports?

CHINA!

China is also dependent on food imports; in fact, to feed its large population (throwback to Module 2 - China has the world’s second-largest population), it has become the world’s largest food importer. China operates with a food trade deficit; it imports more food than it exports. This leaves them vulnerable to changing agricultural markets.

South Africa is among the fastest‑growing economies in Sub‑Saharan Africa. Its Mediterranean climate along the western coast provides ideal conditions for cultivating grapes, citrus, pears, apples, and other export-oriented fruits. These high-value specialty and luxury crops command premium prices on the global market.

South Africa’s food imports are predominantly wheat, palm oil, rice, and poultry to supplement its own production. Many imported food items are prepared and packaged in the United States and Great Britain.

Why?? The Economy, of course!

Why do countries import and export certain food products?

Beyond climate, we need to understand comparative and complementary advantages.

Let’s learn about these two economic concepts as they applies to exports and imports in the United States.

Comparative advantage means a country is especially good at producing something more easily, cheaply, or efficiently than other countries.

How it relates to the United States:

The United States has a comparative advantage in growing corn and soybeans.

Why?

The U.S. has huge areas of fertile farmland.
It has advanced technology, like big tractors and irrigation systems.
Farmers grow these crops in massive quantities, which lowers the cost.

Example: Corn and Soybeans

Even though other countries can grow corn and soybeans, the U.S. can grow them:

Faster
In larger amounts
At a lower cost

So, the U.S. exports huge amounts of these crops across the world.

Complementary advantage is when countries trade because they each have something the other needs.

No country can produce everything easily. Differences in climate, resources, and costs mean some foods are better grown elsewhere.

How it relates to U.S. food imports:

The U.S. imports foods that are:

Hard to grow here
Too expensive to produce here
Better grown in other climates

Examples of U.S. Food Imports

Bananas (grow better in tropical climates)
Coffee (needs high‑altitude tropical regions)
Avocados (Mexico grows them more cheaply and year‑round)

These foods “complement” what the U.S. produces.

Other countries rely on U.S. crops like corn and soybeans, while the U.S. relies on them for foods it cannot grow well.

Let’s take a look at how the global system of agriculture applies to a few more common agricultural products:

🍌 Bananas - Plantation Culture

Grown on large-scale commercial plantations in tropical regions.
Bananas are an example of monoculture, as the plantations depend exclusively on bananas for profits.
Bananas depend on cool chain technology to transport bananas over long distances to prevent spoilage.

🍤 Shrimp and Fish - Aquaculture

Aquaculture (aquafarming) is being used to meet the high demand globally for protein. It provides about 50% of the world’s seafood.
It is a type of intensive farming, with fish and shellfish raised in large quantities in sea nets and tanks.
There are environmental risks to aquaculture – the spread of parasites due to high density in tanks, the use of antibiotics, and the breeding of escaped fish with local species.

🍫 Cacao (Chocolate) - Luxury Crop

Grown on large commercial plantations in tropical regions. Similar to coffee, chocolate is grown in peripheral countries but processed and consumed in core countries.
Countries that produce cocoa often rely heavily on this single commodity and face neocolonial pressures from transnational corporations that capture most of the profits from chocolate production.
High demand for chocolate can lead to soil depletion and deforestation to meet the global demand.

🌴 Palm Oil – Industrial Agriculture

Palm oil is a vegetable oil used to make many processed foods, soap, and cosmetics.
Indonesia and Malaysia produce 80% of the world’s palm oil, which is exported by transnational corporations for processing.
Demand for palm oil is increasing as demand for packaged, processed food increases because it has a high yield and versatility.

🌾 Wheat - Commercial Grain Farming

Grain crops are used to make bread, pasta, cereal, and flour. It is grown on large commercial farms in the United States, Russia, Ukraine, Canada, and Australia.
Highly mechanized and uses advanced technology to plant, fertilize, harvest, and export across the world. Wheat, like palm oil, is an example of industrial agriculture, designed to produce large amounts of food for international markets.
The war between Ukraine and Russia is an example of how a global supply chain can be disrupted. The war between the two wheat-exporting countries has reduced exports, raising wheat prices and affecting food availability in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

The global system of agriculture is the worldwide network of food production, processing, distribution, and consumption, shaped by economic, environmental, and political factors.
