Being a Teacher is Hard Enough...

Imagine you are teaching a class where one student has dyslexia, another is not fluent in English, another is gifted in math, and another has ADHD.

How can one teacher help all these students learn in the same classroom?

In this lesson, we will explore how effective teaching practices make a difference for learners with diverse needs.

Learning isn't "One Size Fits All"

Every classroom is filled with students who learn in different ways. Some pick up new ideas quickly, and others need more time or a different approach. Some students may have a learning disability like dyslexia, while others may be gifted in a certain subject. You might also have English Language Learners who are still building their vocabulary or students with ADHD who find it hard to focus for long periods.

*Learning differences* simply mean that students have unique ways of processing information — it doesn’t mean they can’t learn, just that they may need different supports. *Exceptionalities* include both disabilities and giftedness, and they often require teachers to make instructional adjustments so that every student can succeed. For example, a student with dyslexia might use text-to-speech software, while a gifted student might work on an advanced project. Understanding these differences helps teachers plan lessons that are fair and effective. When teachers recognize that ‘fair’ doesn’t always mean ‘the same,’ they can create inclusive classrooms where every learner has the tools and support they need to grow. Learning differences: Variations in how students learn (e.g., visual/auditory preference, processing speed). Exceptionalities: Conditions that require additional support or services (e.g., giftedness, ADHD, autism, dyslexia, physical impairments). Laws That Support Student Needs

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

- Guarantees that students with disabilities have access to free and appropriate public education (FAPE).
- Requires schools to provide special education services tailored to each student’s needs.
- Establishes the use of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for eligible students.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (1973)

- Prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in any program receiving federal funding (including public schools).
- Students may receive a 504 Plan with accommodations such as extra test time, assistive technology, or modified classroom seating.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA, 1990)

- Expands protections beyond schools to include public places, transportation, and employment.
- Ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to educational programs and school facilities.

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, 2015)

- Ensures equal opportunities for all students, including those from disadvantaged or special populations.
- Emphasizes high standards, accountability, and inclusion for students with disabilities in general education.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

- Protects the privacy of student educational records.
- Gives parents (and students over 18) the right to view, request corrections to, or control disclosure of educational information.
