Before we dive into history, I want you to imagine this: What if public schools didn’t exist? Who would get an education? Who might be left out? And how would that change our society?

The truth is, schools in the United States haven’t always been free, equal, or open to everyone. Over the last 400 years, education has gone through enormous changes — from colonial schools that focused on religion and morality, to Horace Mann’s push for free, universal ‘common schools,’ to John Dewey’s progressive ideas about learning by doing.

We’ll see how different movements — the Civil Rights Movement, women’s rights, disability rights, and bilingual education — expanded opportunities to more groups of students. We’ll also learn about the key leaders and thinkers who shaped American schooling, and we’ll reflect on what makes schools effective today.

This unit explores the development of public education in the United States, from its colonial roots to modern times. You will analyze historical events, influential figures, and major movements that shaped the system. You will also reflect on the purposes of education in a democratic society and evaluate how those purposes connect to today’s global context. By the end of the unit, you should be able to assess both the successes and shortcomings of U.S. education and articulate the qualities of an effective school.
