Developments in South and Southeast Asia from c. 1200 to c. 1450

In this lesson, students will learn the impact of religion on the civilizations of South and Southeast Asia and the formation of states in the region.

Religions and Their Impact

Between 1200 and 1450, the societies of South and Southeast Asia were deeply influenced by the spread and interaction of Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism. Although all these faiths were formed long before 1200, their influence was significant across this period. As we have seen in previous lessons, the values of a religious tradition become infused into societies and impact their social, religious, and even economic patterns.

Hinduism reinforced the social structure of South Asia by making commitment to castes a religious duty.
Buddhism, while challenging ideas of social hierarchies, provided education, helped trade, and supported regional kings.
Islam brought increased trade to all areas it came to. In this lesson, you will learn the ways this occurred as well as some necessary vocabulary relevant to the religions of South and Southeast Asia.

As we move on in the lesson, we will focus on each major religion in turn and its impact on the region.
