What's the Point?

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply the steps of the scientific method to design and explain an investigation about how the human body works.

Jordan is finally back on the soccer field after his knee injury. His friend Maya, who has been studying anatomy, is on the sidelines observing. As Jordan begins to sprint, she notices that his breathing gets faster, his heart beats harder, and sweat starts to form on his forehead. She wonders what is happening inside his body that causes all these changes.

Instead of guessing, Maya decides to think like a scientist. She uses the scientific method to explore her question. The scientific method is a process that helps scientists investigate ideas, test them carefully, and draw conclusions supported by evidence. It is the foundation for all scientific discovery, including everything we know about the human body.

The Steps of the Scientific Method

Ask a Question
Science always begins with curiosity. Maya’s question is: How does short-term exercise affect heart rate?
Form a Hypothesis
A hypothesis is an educated guess that can be tested. Maya predicts:
If Jordan exercises for two minutes, then his heart rate will increase because his muscles need more oxygen.
Design and Conduct the Experiment
Maya decides what she will change, what she will measure, and what she will keep the same.

The independent variable is what she changes on purpose (exercise duration).
The dependent variable is what she measures (heart rate).
The controlled variables are the conditions that stay the same (location, temperature, and time of day).
She measures Jordan’s pulse before and after running to collect her data.

Analyze the Data
After recording the results, Maya graphs Jordan’s heart rate and looks for patterns. She sees that his heart rate increases with exercise. This data helps her decide whether her hypothesis was supported.
Draw a Conclusion
Maya concludes that exercise causes the heart to beat faster so that more oxygen can reach the muscles. Her hypothesis was supported by her evidence.
Communicate Results
Maya shares her experiment and results with her teacher and classmates so that others can learn from her findings. Scientists share their data in reports, presentations, and discussions so knowledge can grow.

The scientific method helps us make sense of the world and the human body. It ensures that scientific ideas are supported by clear, measurable evidence rather than assumptions.
