Reminders, Edits, and Making It Just Right!

While we covered editing and revision a lot in the previous module, it’s important to take the task seriously. Even though you submitted what should have been your final and polished draft at the end of the previous module, it’s important to take the time to go back and review it at least one more time prior to uploading.

One strategy for reviewing your paper is to review in rounds. That way, rather than trying to do everything all at once, you’re focused on one specific task at a time.

Round 1: Strength of Argument

Check the Central Argument (Line of Reasoning)

Questions to ask yourself:

Can I state my main claim in one clear sentence?
Does each major section logically build toward that claim?

Potential Actions to Take:

Make sure that each section is clearly and fully linked back to the clear purpose of your study. If the connection is unclear, go back and add direct clarity.

Strengthen Complexity and Nuance

Questions to ask yourself:

Do I acknowledge limitations, counterarguments, or conflicting perspectives?
Do I explain why my findings matter rather than just what they show?

Potential Actions to take:

Consider adding 1–2 sentences in analysis sections that address alternative explanations and discuss constraints (sample size, bias, methodology limits)
Revise the conclusion to emphasize implications, not a summary.

Round 2: Content and Evidence Evaluation

Evidence & Analysis: This is where most AP papers need the most work.

Questions to ask yourself:

Is evidence integrated, not dropped?
Am I analyzing more than I’m quoting?

Potential Actions to take: For each piece of evidence, check that you have:

Context (where it comes from)
Explanation (what it shows)
Connection (why it matters to your claim)

Verify Source Quality and Balance

Questions to ask yourself:

Do I use a variety of credible, scholarly sources?
Am I over‑relying on one author or one type of study?

Potential Actions to Take:

Highlight sources you use multiple times—add synthesis with other authors.
Double‑check that all sources:

Are relevant to your specific research question
Are cited where discussed (not only at the end)

Any source on your Works Cited page should be used and cited internally in your paper and vice versa

Round 3: Organization and Clarity - Make it easier for the reader to follow your thinking.

Improve Paragraph Structure

Questions to Ask Yourself:

Does every paragraph have a clear focus?
Would a reader understand the main idea from the first sentence?

Potential Actions to Take:

Revise topic sentences to clearly state the analytical focus, not just the topic.
Break up paragraphs longer than ¾ of a page.

Strengthen Transitions

Questions to Ask Yourself:

Do sections feel connected or isolated?
Do I explain shifts in ideas, methods, or perspectives?

Potential Actions to Take:

Add transition sentences that explain:

How this section builds on the previous one
Why a new approach or source is necessary

Round 4: Style, Precision & Academic Voice

Revise for Precision and Academic Tone

Questions to Ask Yourself:

Am I using specific, discipline‑appropriate language?
Do I avoid vague words (things, stuff, a lot, very)?

Potential Actions to Take:

Replace vague terms with concrete ones.
Cut filler phrases like:

“In today’s society”
“This paper will explain”

Convert passive voice only when active voice adds clarity.

Eliminate Redundancy

Am I repeating the same idea in multiple places?

Potential Actions to Take:

Highlight repeated claims or explanations.
Merge or cut sections that say the same thing in different words.

Round 5: Read Aloud and Do a Final Proof Read

Questions to Ask Yourself:

Does it sound polished and professional?
Are there grammar or punctuation issues that hurt clarity?

Potential Actions to Take:

Read the paper aloud or use text‑to‑speech.
Fix:

Run‑ons and fragments
Wordiness
Typos and formatting inconsistencies

Before Moving On

Complete one last metacognitive check of your paper by answering the following questions truthfully and honestly

What is my strongest section—and why?
What is my weakest section—and what could improve it?
What do I want the reader to remember most?
