Putting it All Together: Reminders and What to Include while writing this section!

The writing of this section of your paper lays the groundwork for future studies to be completed, including replicating yours, if desired. As such, attention to detail is paramount!

Remember, the purpose of this section of your paper is to show:

How the data was collected
Why the method/process/approach used was appropriate
What steps were taken to reduce bias and ensure validity
That someone could reasonably replicate the study

In essence, this section answers the question, “How did you go about answering your research question?”

Everything in this section of your paper must directly connect to your research question. You should be able to explain

Why this type of data (quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, etc.) fits the question
Why primary data, secondary data, or both were needed
Why the population or sources chosen make sense

Remember that this section does NOT include results or interpretations. College Board wants to see you clearly and directly highlight the steps taken. You are highlighting the replicability and transparency used to design and implement your data collection.

Quantitative Data Collection

If you used quantitative data collection, which is used when measuring, comparing, or identifying patterns, then you likely had data collection that involved surveys with numerical scales (Likert, rankings), experimental data (controlled variables), or used existing datasets (government, institutional, statistical).

In this section of your paper, you must explain your variables (independent, dependent, and controlled), measurement tools or instruments, and/or your sampling method (random, convenience, stratified, etc.).

Qualitative Data Collection

If you used qualitative data collection, which is used when exploring experiences, perspectives, or meanings, then you likely had data collection that involved interviews (structured or semi-structured), focus groups, open-ended surveys, and/or context analysis (texts, speeches, media).

In this section of your paper, you must explain your question design, your coding and/or analysis approach, and how themes were identified.

Mixed Methods

If you used a mixed methods approach, which is used to deepen understanding of both numerical trends and personal insight, then you must justify why both methods were necessary and how the data types complement each other.

Here are some important reminders about tackling all of the necessary information to be covered in this section of your paper. Double-check that you are being as thorough and detailed as possible while remaining focused and objective!

Data Collection Procedures (Step-by-Step Clarity)

When you are detailing your data collection procedure, you must explain exactly what you did, in logical order.

When and where did the data collection occur?
How were participants or sources selected?
How was data gathered (online, in-person, archival)?
How long did the process take?
What instructions did the participants receive?

Sampling and Participants (if applicable)

When you are identifying your participants and sampling strategies (as applicable), be sure to include

Target population
Sample size
Recruitment method
Inclusion or exclusion criteria.

You should also acknowledge limitations, such as

Small sample size
Convenience sampling
Demographic imbalance.

NOTE: Many students think that acknowledging limitations will hinder their grade and progress, but it is a KEY AND ESSENTIAL aspect of any true research project. The College Board is ok with imperfect samples as long as students acknowledge and explain the limitations that exist!

Ethical Considerations (REQUIRED)

All studies, even informal ones, must address ethics. You should discuss the following as needed and if they pertain to your individual study:

Informed consent
Participant anonymity or confidentiality
Minimizing harm or discomfort
IRB or teacher approval (if applicable)
Ethical use of secondary data

Reliability, Validity, and Bias

The goal is that you are demonstrating awareness, not perfection. Address

Steps taken to reduce research bias
Consistency of instruments or procedures used
Potential sources of error
Limitation of the method

NOTE: This type of reflection strengthens the credibility of the study overall, because it shows true engagement and highlights attempts to remove bias from the study
