Sweet, Tangy, and Messy: Characters, Point of View, and Conflict

What's the point? ⚫ Point of View: Shapes how we experience a story and trust the narrator.

⚫ Characterization: Reveals who characters are and how culture influences identity.

⚫ Conflict: Drives change and adds emotional depth, like the tang in Polynesian sauce.

In this lesson, you will see how characters, point of view, and conflict mix together like the sweet, tangy, and messy flavors of Polynesian sauce to show how culture shapes identity in a story.

We’ve covered the important parts of the plot diagram, and we’ve gone through how to look for the twists and turns that create suspense. Now, we’ll look at some other important elements that add depth to the flavor of a story.

Point of View

Point of view is the perspective from which a story is told. It shows us who is telling the story and how much they know about the events and characters.

There are four main types of point of view to look for when you read:

2nd person	You	The narrator speaks directly to the reader.	The story talks to you as if you are the voyager.

3rd person omniscient	He, She, They	The narrator is outside of the story as an observer.	We know what everyone feels.

Conflict and Characterization

Characterization

Characterization is the way an author develops and shows what a character is like, and in our case, can explain how these character choices shape identity and culture in a story. We can ask ourselves: What do I know about this character just by looking? What might their actions, words, or choices tell me about them?”

This can happen in two ways:

Direct Characterization
- The author tells us traits directly.
  - Example: “Molly was brave.”
    - We know by the direct words of the author that Molly was brave.
Indirect Characterization
- The author shows traits through a character’s speech, thoughts, actions, looks, and how others react (STEAL).
  - Example: “Sarah pushed Molly as she walked through the hall."
    - We can see that through Sarah’s actions that she might not be a very nice person.
- S.T.E.A.L.
  - A popular acronym used to remember what to look for when indirectly characterizing
    - S: Speech
    - T: Thoughts
    - E: Effects on others
    - A: Actions
    - L: Looks

S.T.E.A.L.	S.T.E.A.L. Explanation	Example	Character Analysis
S: Speech	What does the character say? How do they speak to others?	Moana says, "I am Moana of Motunui!"	Her claims about who she is show her courage in asserting her identity.
T: Thoughts	What is the character thinking or feeling?	Moana sings the song "How Far I'll Go" (essentially to herself-her thoughts).	Her thoughts about what she's doing show that she wants freedom past the reef.
E: Effects on Others	What do other people think about the characters?	The villagers look up to Moana but are also scared of her curiosity.	This reveals Moana doesn't quite fit their expectations, but they still respect her.
A: Actions	What does the character do?	Moana sails past the reef alone (which she is not supposed to do).	She shows that she is brave and determined.
L: Looks	What does the character's appearance tell us?	Moana's necklace holding the heart of Te Fiti.	The necklace reveals she is the chosen to protect the people.

Characterization matters because it helps us understand who characters really are—what they want, what they're scared of, and how they change. If we only look at the plot (the “nuggets”), the story might seem plain. But when we study characterization, we discover the “sauce”—the details, traits, and personalities that add flavor and meaning. Just like Polynesian sauce gives nuggets their sweet-and-tangy taste, characterization gives stories depth and makes characters memorable.

Conflict

Conflict is the struggle that gives a story its kick, just like the tangy bite in Polynesian sauce. Without that contrast of sweet and tangy, the sauce would be flat — and without conflict, a story would be bland.

Internal Conflict
- Man vs. Self
  - Example: Like deciding if you want more sauce even though you’re already full — it’s a struggle inside yourself.
External Conflict
- Man vs. Man, Nature, Society, Technology
  - Example: When your friend takes the last nugget or the sauce spills all over your shirt — problems that come from the outside.

Types of Conflict

Man vs. Self	A character struggles with, sometimes, within his or her own mind.	Debating with yourself whether you should eat the last chicken nugget with Polynesian sauce or save it for later.	Moana struggles with who she really is and what her role should be.
Man vs. Man	Two characters have an issue with each other.	Like fighting with someone over the last chicken nugget with Polynesian sauce.	Moana and Maui fight when Maui refuses to help at first.
Man vs. Nature	A character has a problem with the environment.	The wind from a storm spills your Polynesian sauce before you can eat it.	Moana struggles against the storms while she is sailing, and the monster also causes problems.
Man vs. Society	A character has a problem with the rules, beliefs, or laws of the group of people around them. It's not just one person they are fighting, but the way the whole community thinks or acts.	Everyone says Ranch is the best, but you think Polynesian sauce is the best.	Moana's village expects her to stay on the island and be chief, not sail past the reef. Her society's rules go against her beliefs.
Man vs. Technology	A character has a problem with machines or inventions.	You can't get the self-checkout machine to scan your Polynesian sauce.	Maui's fishhook (a tool/weapon) is an issue when it breaks, leaving him without power.

Applying Understanding

We've gone through point of view, characterization, and conflict, so let’s practice identifying and analyzing each element with a different actual short story: “Thank You, Ma’am" by Langston Hughes.

About the Author: Langston Hughes was an African American writer and poet who became an important voice during the Harlem Renaissance – a time period in history when Black art and culture were celebrated in the 1920s. He wrote about real life, struggles, and pride in African American identity.

About the Text: “Thank You, Ma’am” is like Polynesian sauce — sweet and tangy at the same time. The sweet part is Mrs. Jones’s kindness, like when she feeds Roger and shows him trust. The tangy part is her tough love, making him face what he did wrong.

As you read, notice not only what is happening in the story (the plot), but also notice how Hughes uses point of view, characterization, and conflict while showing how people can learn, grow, and shape their identity through respect and care.

Keep the following comprehension utensils in your apron to pull out and use as you read, as well, as you engage with a variety of texts:

Know your purpose and goals for reading and understanding this short story – you'll adjust as needed.
Scan and skim the story while making note of important or useful parts.
Use your prior knowledge to understand and gaps in the story.
Summarize and visualize sections of the story to help continue understanding.
Make predictions about what might happen next in the story.
Think of the different levels of meaning in the story – there is the plot but then also the deeper elements to consider for analysis.
Remember to use context clues and parts of speech to determine unknown meanings of words.
