Ce que j'ai fait le week-end passé

This module focuses on a new verb tense, the passé composé. So far you have learned the following verb tenses:

  1. present tense verbs (what you are doing)
  2. immediate future ( futur proche - what you are going to do)
  3. recent past (what you just did)

Le passé composé is a past tense and the most commonly used past tense in French. This past tense is composed of two parts - the helping verb (auxiliary verb) and the past participle.

In the following text, you will see verbs in the present tense and in the past tense. The words bolded in the text show le passé composé. Read the text carefully and complete the embedded activities to learn more about le passé composé.

Once you have read the text carefully, listen to it. Pause the text recording at different intervals and repeat what you hear. This is how you practice speaking French! Practice, practice, practice. Speaking another language is fun!

*Ce que in this context means what. The most common translation for what you know in French is quoi. However, ce que is what they call a relative pronoun because it introduces a subordinate clause. You don't need to know how to use ce que at this point in your study of French. However, it is good to be able to recognize it and what it means.
