QDS: Conjugating être, avoir and -er verbs - Review
Conjugating être, avoir and -er verbs
In the previous presentation, there were three slides that discussed conjugating verbs. Let's take a second look at those three slides. Be sure to practice conjugating each of the verbs you learn to become comfortable with their forms.
être
Let's Compare. Pay Attention to the verbs | |
---|---|
Je viens des États-Unis. | Je suis américain. |
Tu viens des États-Unis. | Tu es américain. |
Vous venez des États-Unis. | Vous êtes américain. |
Il vient des États-Unis. | Il est américain. |
Elle vient des États-Unis. | Elle est américaine. |
Do you notice how the verb changes according to the subject? This is called conjugation. You must conjugate the verb to agree with the subject. This is the same in English. For example, you don’t say I comes from the US or I is American. |
avoir
Let's add talking about age.
- J’ai quinze ans.
- Tu as quinze ans.
- Vous avez quinze ans.
- Il a quinze ans.
- Elle a quinze ans.

TRANSLATION NOTE: In French, j’ai quinze ans literally translates as I have 15 years. However, it means I am 15. That’s why you can say je suis français, but you can’t say je suis quinze. For age, you have to use the verb to have: j’ai - I have tu as / vous avez - you have il / elle a - he / she has
