QDS: Definite Articles Introduction
Definite Articles
You will learn about definite articles, the equivalent of which is the in English. There are four definite articles in French. As you will see, most of the definite articles in French are le, la, or les. Sometimes you will see l'. It is important that you learn the gender of nouns when learning vocabulary in French. When you see l' as the definite article, you don't immediately know the gender of the noun. You will have to look it up.
If you see:
- (m), the noun is masculine
- (f), the noun is feminine.
Take note of the nouns in the presentation for which the definite article is l'. You will need to look those words up to know if they are masculine or feminine. Why the l' ? French is all about sound, and the language generally does not "like" two vowels in a row because of the sound. Thus, le and la become l' when the noun begins with a vowel or silent h.
Here are terms that you will be seeing in your online course. Come back and review often!
