Language notes

  • 上
    • Here it means last. "上周" means "last week" and "上节课"means "last class".  "下" means next,. "下周" means "next week" and "下节课" means "next class" etc.

 

  • ... ...的话
    • It means "if..." . It can also expressed as " 如果... ...的话 ".

 

  • 请
    • It literally means "Please", but here it means "to invite". For example, 我请你吃饭 means "I invite you to dinner" (It is my treat.)

 

  • 顺便
    • It means "to drop by".  The expression, "顺便说一下" means "by the way...".

 

  • 差一刻四点
    • It means "quarter to four", in which " 差 " means "to",   and " 一刻 " means "quarter of an hour" or "fifteen minutes".

 

  • 看看
    • It means "to take a look" or "to have a look". The reduplication of verbs indicates an attempt.
