Integumentary System: Protection

Changes in the integrity of the skin are the most visible signs of aging.

  • The integumentary system is the flexible, protective covering of the human body consisting of structures such as hair, nails, and the skin, the largest organ of the human body. The skin has two distinct layers called the epidermis and the dermis and is anchored to the underlying structures by the subcutaneous layer. Be sure to go back and review the function and structure of these three layers.
  • The functions of the integumentary system include protection, sensory reception, regulation of temperature, synthesis, and storage of nutrients, and excretion and secretion.
  • Homeostasis can be disrupted if the skin is physically injured or if a person is afflicted with a skin condition or disorder.  Examples of skin conditions include acne, eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S.
  • The integumentary system changes as a person ages.  Aging affects the cell cycle and cells, causing the skin to become thinner and less elastic. The production of sweat and melanin also reduces as a person ages.
