Structure and Function of the Human Body Review
Human anatomy is the study of the structure of the body, whereas, physiology is the study of how the human body functions. Structure begets structure in the human body.
- The anatomy of the human body can be broken down into 9 different functional levels (from smallest to largest): atom < molecule < macromolecule < organelle < cell < tissue < organ < organ system < organism.
- In order to survive, humans need water, food, oxygen, heat, and pressure. Diseases impair the natural function of the human body and are studied in a branch of science known as pathophysiology.
- When studying anatomy, certain anatomical terms are used to identify body parts and the relationship between two body parts. Be sure to go back and review these terms in the Geometric View of the Human Body learning object.
- The interior of the human body is composed of various cavities that contain specific organs. These cavities include the cranial, abdominal, thoracic, abdominopelvic, vertebral, pelvic, and ventral body.
- Homeostasis is the process of maintaining a good working environment for all of the parts inside of the human body. Homeostasis is maintained by various feedback systems (endocrine and nervous systems) that monitor the internal conditions of the body.
