Connecting It All Together: Joints and Skeletal Movement

Joints are points of contact between two bones. The primary function of a joint is to hold two bones together. That does not mean that joints are rigid. Many joints allow for flexibility and movement while some remain static. Joints are classified based on:

Joint Function: How much movement is allowed? Synarthrosis (immobile), amphiarthrosis (slight movement), or diarthrosis (free mobility)
Joint structure: The type of material holding the bones together. Fibrous, cartilangenous, or synovial.

The structural classification is most commonly used.
