Review What is Art Module
Art is a form of visual communication and an artwork is the visual expression of an idea created with skill. Artists can communicate ideas and emotion through their artworks without the use of written word or a particular language. Art, like a world language, can be learned through practice and extended study and is not a special talent that you have to be born with in order to be successful. What inspires artists to create can be personal, social, spiritual, physical or educational. As an artist you must learn to perceive an object and become deeply aware through all 5 senses of its nature in order to transcend it, change it or create art with it.
All art falls into 5 functions in society regardless of medium or time period.
- Personal
- Social
- Spiritual
- Physical
- Educational
Artists get ideas from many sources including: People and real world events, ideas commissioned by employers, artists of the past, spiritual and religious beliefs, myths and legends and creative techniques they want to try.
There are three parts of an artwork:
- Subject
- Composition
- Content
Artists keep visual verbal journals to record ideas, write about concepts, practice media techniques and create sketches for future projects. A visual verbal journal includes personal insight and written content including reflections on assignments after completion and on your journey as an artist.
