Fundamentals of Sculpture

Fundamentals of all 3-dimensional art include form, content, and technique

Form, content, and technique are considered the fundamentals of all three-dimensional art.  

  • Form refers to the volume and mass or three-dimensional aspects of objects that take up physical space. In order to be considered to be a form, the object must have height, width, and depth.
  • Content refers to the tone, mood, essence, statement, feeling, emotion, beauty, and reality portrayed in the sculpture.
  • Technique is the combination of ability and the proper use of tools and materials.   As a sculptor, you must have knowledge of how to work with a particular media like clay or paper in order to know what tools to use and you must know how to use the tools in order to work with the media required to have a successful sculpture.
