SS - Suspense and Short Stories Lesson
Suspense and Short Stories
Suspense is a feeling of pleasurable fascination and excitement mixed with apprehension, tension, and anxiety developed from an unpredictable, mysterious, and rousing source of entertainment. The term most often refers to an audience's perceptions in a dramatic work. Suspense is not exclusive to fiction. It may operate whenever there is a perceived suspended drama or a chain of cause is left in doubt, with tension being a primary emotion felt as part of the situation. Think about all of the movies you've watched or stories you've read that made you sit on the edge of your seat, so to speak, because you were not sure what would happen next. That is the feeling of suspense.
"The Most Dangerous Game" is full of suspense. The reader wonders with each twist and turn what will happen to the main character.
Likewise, "The Cask of Amontillado" is also full of suspense. Edgar Allan Poe is considered a master of suspense. As you read his story, reflect on what made Poe a well-known mystery and suspense writer.
