RelationshipWhen Auguste Comte coined his term "sociology" in the 1830s, he intended for it to become the field to replace all other academic disciplines.  As you can see from perusing any college's course catalog, this did not happen.  The subject of sociology is included in a plethora of academic and practical interests ranging from business studies to medical training to the humanities.  

 

 

 

Story of Sociology:  Social Science Fields

Defined as the systematic study of human society and behavior, sociology (as determined by the American National Science Foundation) is included among the fields of the social sciences.  Fields listed as a social science differ from the humanities  due to the former's reliance on the scientific method  and include the following disciplines:

Careers in Sociology

As you read in the introduction to this module, many famous people have majored in sociology while studying at a university.  As a subject of study with such a wide scope, all manner of careers are open to the sociology student.  Below, however, you will learn of those careers that expressly seek sociology majors.

Did you spot anything you were interested in?  If not, don't worry, this is still a useful subject for you to study since the odds are you will pick a career that includes people.  What would better prepare you for being around others than having scientifically studied society?
