Psychosocial Development

Several psychologists followed in the footsteps of Freud. These NeoFreudian theorists appreciated Freud's focus on the unconscious mind, but did not agree with all of his philosophies. One important NeoFreudian developmental thinker was Erik Erikson, who came up with a new development theory, one that focused on social interactions instead of on sexual desires.

Erikson's Stages of Psychosocial Development: Trust vs Mistrust, Autonomy vs Shame/Doubt, Initiative vs Guilt, Industry vs Inferiority, Identity vs Role Confusion, Intimacy vs Isolation, Generativity vs Stagnation, Integrity vs Despair

At each stage of Erikson's Psychosocial Stages there is a social conflict that must be resolved in order to move on.
