Descriptive Writing Review

Recall that figurative language helps reveal the deeper meaning of poems, but the use of figurative language also creates images in your mind in order to draw you in further to the reading. Review the following video on descriptive writing in order to learn why authors and poets use certain language in their writings:

The purpose of descriptive writing is to paint a picture for the reader or to make the reader feel like he or she is actually experiencing your writing. Recall that descriptive Essays should still have organization through paragraph structure. Previously, you learned how to organize an essay to describe an image and to think about grouping your ideas according to what item or area of the image you are describing. For Example:

  1. Introduction Paragraph
  2. Body Paragraph I - First Aspect: The Sky
  3. Body Paragraph II - Second Aspect: The Field
  4. Body Paragraph III - Third Aspect: The Farm
  5. Conclusion Paragraph

Within the body paragraphs, figurative language allows the reader to see, touch, taste, smell, and feel the picture below:

Using Descriptive Elements in Narrative Writing

However, descriptive essays do not just have to describe pictures or images. Descriptive writing should be used when illustrating anything—your favorite vacation, your daily routine, your perfect day, etc. So, you can use elements of descriptive writing in your narrative writings. The purpose of descriptive writing is to make the reader feel as though he or she is present in the scene you choose to write about—whatever that scene might be. Therefore, you might organize your paragraphs similar to a narrative and write in chronological order. For Example:

  1. Introduction Paragraph
  2. Body Paragraph I - Morning Routine
  3. Body Paragraph II - Daytime Routine
  4. Body Paragraph III - Nighttime Routine
  5. Conclusion Paragraph

View the following example of descriptive elements used in a narrative essay written to describe someone's daily routine.
