PS - The Sonnet Lesson
The Sonnet
The analysis process works with any kind of poem, and remember that there are many different types of poems! One popular poem type called the sonnet is a lyric poem that contains a fixed form. Lyric poems are highly emotional poems, and a fixed form just means that there is a particular structure that each sonnet follows. Even though there are a few different kinds of sonnets, you can expect to encounter the following characteristics when reading a sonnet:
Types of Sonnets
Each sonnet type has a volta, or turn, where a shift in tone or subject occurs. The volta occurs in a different location in the poem depending on the type of sonnet. Use the chart below to view the similarities and differences among the three main sonnet types:

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
|
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here are our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

"Into My Own" by Robert Frost |

My love is like to ice, and I to fire; how comes it then that this her cold so great is not dissolv'd through my so hot desire, but harder grows the more I her intreat? Or how comes it that my exceeding heat is not delayed by her heart frozen cold: but that I burn much more in boiling sweat, and feel my flames augmented manifold? What more miraculous thing may be told that fire which all things melts, should harden ice: and ice which is congeal'd with senseless cold, should kindle fire by wonderful device. Such is the power of love in gentle mind, that it can alter all the course of kind.

One of my wishes is that those dark trees, So old and firm they scarcely show the breeze, Were not, as 'twere, the merest mask of gloom, But stretched away unto the edge of doom. I should not be withheld but that some day Into their vastness I should steal away, Fearless of ever finding open land, Or highway where the slow wheel pours the sand. I do not see why I should e'er turn back, Or those should not set forth upon my track To overtake me, who should miss me here And long to know if still I held them dear. They would not find me changed from him they knew-- Only more sure of all I thought was true.
